Many modern mouthpieces benefit from some key services that their machine facing process omits.  For example, ALL machine faced mouthpieces on the market have concave tables, and for most examples your playing experience can greatly improve by correcting the table - we can bias your mouthpiece's table to be flat or concave - but it must be done correctly.  A flat table will improve response and resonance, and a proper concavity will add flexibilty, nuance, and range.  Either way, you'll be better served with a hand applied table.  
 
Additionally many modern mouthpieces feature wide rails.  I often get inquiries from professors and orchestra players to narrow the rails of their too wide railed mouthpiece in the simple desire for added response, freedom, and resonance.  This is a relatively inexpensive alteration which can make a mouthpiece sing.  It's really amazing what narrowing the tip rail can do!
